You have to start somewhere...
My name is Travis...you already have that. But where do I begin to talk about myself so that I feel relevant (and you feel like I am relevant) enough to speak on this topic of Spirit at Work?
During a "performance review" a few years ago, my new manager was trying to figure out what made me tick. She asked, "What really excites you about your work?" My response was pretty simple, I said, "I need to be having fun." I know it sounds cliche, and possibly even juvenile...but I feel it is deeper than that.
For me...having fun means lots of different things. I am having the most fun when I am doing work that I feel has a vision behind it...meaning...it is something that I feel apart of in a really meaningful and connected way...and not simply just collecting a paycheck. I have had those jobs too. There are times when we need "paycheck" jobs to pay the bills...and they are not always fun.
It is easy for me to track my career path to date and understand why I made the decisions that I made. Not to bore you with my own version of the "yellow brick road," but since my graduation from college in 1995 (yikes)...I have worked in advertising, been a radio show co-host, worked in marketing, coached high school soccer, worked in the family fast-food business, worked as a sports facility manager, performed professionally for an improvisational theater, taugh acting classes to adults and kids, have helped people pray and find spiritual answers, hosted conferences, served as the Community Supervisor for a spirituality Web site, and I know there are a few other things I am leaving off.
To me...all of things mentioned above...they all inspired me. When I am inspired...I bring inspiration to my work. The other common thread with everything above...was the fact that they were all a lot of fun. I loved the people I worked with...I loved the end result...and I felt like I had unique qualities that I could bring to the table that would be beneficial.
Nowadays...all of my work is freelance...and I love it...and I am busier now than I have ever been. I still teach acting, my wife and I own a very new and small photography and video business, I co-own an improv comedy troupe of which I still perform in, I am working with a friend of mine who has an amazingly inspiring business called Worldblu, I have a very fulfilling position in a church group that I belong to, and I am now blogging for this fantastic Web site www.spiritonthejob.com
So...that about sums things up right now. Like I said...you have to start somewhere.
Now...tell me a little bit about you :)
